Inside a house, prep is most of the job
Paint is a small slice of what an interior repaint costs. Labour is the rest, and prep is where most of the labour sits. If you get three quotes and one is two thousand dollars cheaper, it is almost never the paint that is missing.
You can roll two coats onto an unprepped wall in a morning and it will look excellent that afternoon. Twelve months later you get roller marks tracking over cracks nobody filled, patchy sheen where bare plaster drank the paint in and nothing else did, peeling around the shower, and an old water stain bleeding back through a ceiling that should have been sealed.

What actually happens inside your house
Six stages, in order, on every interior job we take.

On-site quote
Our team walks the house with you room by room, checks the condition of every wall and ceiling, and notes what needs repair before paint goes near it. You get a fixed price in writing with the rooms listed, not a rate per square metre and a guess.

Protection
Furniture comes to the middle of the room and gets covered. Floors are dropped and taped at the edges. Handles, switch plates, door furniture and light fittings come off or get masked. It takes an hour or two per area, and it is the reason there is no paint on your floorboards at the end.

Prep and repairs
Sanding back the loose and glossy surfaces, filling cracks and nail holes, patching damaged plaster, caulking every gap where a wall meets a trim, and treating mould in wet areas at the source. Interiors live or die on this step. It is also the one cheap quotes leave out.

Priming and sealing
Bare plaster, fresh patches, water stains, bare timber and any big colour change get sealed first. Skip it and the patches flash through the topcoat as dull spots, or the old stain bleeds back up through two coats of white a fortnight later.

Cut in and two topcoats
Ceilings first, then walls, then trims and doors last so nothing gets knocked. Cut in the edges by hand, roll the field, let it go off properly, then the second coat. Two topcoats on every job we quote.

Walkthrough and cleanup
We walk the house with you in daylight and you point at anything you are not happy with. We fix it there and then. Furniture goes back, hardware goes back on, floors are cleaned and the rubbish leaves with us.
Paints and sheens we use inside
Accredited Painter
As a Dulux Accredited Painter, Dulux is our go to for most jobs, and we are not locked to one brand. We recommend the product that suits the surface, the project and your budget, and we agree it with you before we start. Once the job is underway the product does not change. If a product is wrong for the surface you have got, we say so at quote time rather than after.
Sheen matters more inside than most people expect, and it is the thing homeowners most often get wrong on their own. Too much sheen on an old wall and every undulation and patch shows up under a downlight. Too little in a hallway and you cannot wipe a scuff off without leaving a mark where you wiped.
Everything we use in an occupied house is low odour and low VOC, which is why you can sleep in a room a day or two after it is painted. For nurseries and kids' rooms we go further again, and there is more on that in our post on non-toxic nursery painting.
- Ceilings Matt. Hides surface imperfection under raking light and downlights.
- Walls Low sheen. Washable without flashing every mark you wipe.
- Hallways and high traffic Low sheen in a harder-wearing system that takes a scrub.
- Trims and doors Semi gloss or gloss. Holds a clean edge and survives handling.
- Bathrooms and laundries Semi gloss with a mould-resistant system.
- Nurseries and bedrooms Low VOC, low odour. Back in the room the next day.

Interiors are not weather dependent, so these dates hold. They assume trims and doors are included and that we have reasonable access to the rooms.
What interior painting costs
Straight answer first: nobody can price an interior properly without seeing it. Here is what moves the number.
Two houses with the same floor plan can be a week apart in labour. One has sound walls. The other has thirty years of patched picture hooks, mould behind the bathroom door and a stairwell you need trestles to reach. The paint costs the same on both. The job does not.
As a rough guide, a single room starts from $1,800 and a three bedroom interior from $5,000. Treat both as starting points, not quotes.

What moves the price
- Number of rooms Wall and ceiling area, not floor area. Hallways add up fast.
- Ceiling height High ceilings and voids mean trestles or scaffold, and slower work.
- Condition of the walls Sound and clean is quick. Cracked, damp or peeling is not.
- Trims, doors and windows Detailed work. In or out changes the price noticeably.
- Number of colours Every extra colour is another cut-in and another set-up.
- Colour change Dark over light, or light over dark, can mean a third coat.
- Furniture and access A full house is slower to work around than an empty one.
Pair it with the outside
Doing inside and out on one visit costs less than booking two separate jobs, because the set-up, the access equipment and the travel only happen once.

Questions about interior painting
Almost always, yes. We work area by area so you keep a bedroom to sleep in and a kitchen you can use, and we use low odour, low VOC paints so a room is comfortable again within a day. The only reason to move out is if you want the whole house opened up at once to finish faster.
Yes, and we quote them as separate line items so you can see what each part costs. Ceilings get a matt finish, because anything with sheen picks up every join, roller mark and undulation in the plaster once the afternoon light hits it.
Two topcoats as standard, over a primer or sealer wherever the surface calls for one. Some jobs need three, usually a strong colour going over white or white going over a strong colour. If that is your job we tell you at quote time and it is already in the fixed price.
Yes. We move it to the middle of the room, cover it, and put it back where it was when we finish. Heavy pieces we handle with two people. Anything fragile or genuinely valuable, tell us on day one and we will leave it for you to shift yourself.
If you want them done, yes, and they are worth doing at the same time. Fresh walls against tired yellowed trims is the most common reason a repaint looks half finished. Trims are detailed work so they move the price, and they are listed separately in the quote so you can decide.
We can narrow it down and tell you what actually works on the surface you have. Which whites hold up in a dark hallway, which sheen survives kids and a dog, which ceiling white stops a low room feeling lower. For a full scheme across a whole house, a Dulux colour consultant is worth the money and we can point you at one.
It gets treated, not painted over. We clean it back, treat the surface, fix what is causing it where we can see it, then use a mould-resistant semi gloss system. Painting straight over mould hides it for about three months and then it comes back through.
Regularly. Apartments have their own rules, so we book the lift, work inside the hours the building allows, and keep the common areas covered and clean. If the strata committee needs to approve anything we deal with the building manager directly.
